Vitesse Road Clinic — Sunday 2/23/14

Vitesse Sport Performance will be holding a practice clinic on the road this weekend for any rider interested in learning cycling technique and running through training exercises at both low and high speeds.  The goal is to bring varying ability levels together for practice before the racing season begins.  The clinic will review important technique, safety, and group riding protocols, and then simulate examples in mock races.

This is an excellent way for new or less experienced riders to see what riding in a group feels like, pick up tips and information, and practice skills with others.  The more experienced riders will have an opportunity for harder training as the groups split into practice drills in the second half, plus brush up on tactics and sprinting.  The clinic is strongly recommended for riders who have never raced and plan to start this season.

ChesCo Grand Prix dominated by Vitesse athletes

Vitesse Owner Michael Chauner led his athletes by example in the ChesCo Grand Prix

Southeastern Pennsylvania’s hottest new criterium series swept through Chester County towns from July 4th through 13th, and most of the racing was dictated by the powerful athletes who train at Vitesse Sport Performance.  Over the course of the week, Vitesse athletes took six wins and thirteen podium places, putting the hard-working team at the forefront of the regional circuit’s radar.

Vitesse Athlete Stephanie Nearpass Gonzalez sprints to victory in the Pro Women's ChesCo Road Race

The ChesCo Grand Prix included a demanding road race on July 4th that wove through the region’s beautiful farmland and challenged riders along a 13 mile rolling course.  In the pro women’s division, Vitesse rider Stephanie Gonzalez notched her toughest win yet against international competition, which bolstered her already stellar resume as she takes on her first Professional road event at Cascade Classic in Bend, Oregon this July.

In the Category 4 women’s race on July 4th, hard workers Laurie Grimmelsman and Susan Friedrich battled the relentless heat to finish 4th and 7th respectively in a competitive local field.

The Cat 3 and Master’s racing at the ChesCo Grand Prix saw action from Gordon Stone, Mike Barbone, and Chuck Arensberg, who each played a significant role in the races from day to day.  Gordon Stone rode a crafty road race on July 4th in the Master’s division to take a podium spot, and showed his consistent form by finishing third three days later at the Coatesville Classic.

Mike Barbone powered to a 5th place in arguably the toughest circuit of the series in Parkesburg, and then improved as the week went on to finish 4th in Phoenixville and 10th in the Kennett Square Finals.

Chuck Arensberg kept the fans on their toes in more than one tight finish throughout the week.  Before the series began, Chuck participated in the Iron Hill

Chuck Arensberg of Equipe Vitesse finished well in the 2013 ChesCo Grand Prix

Twilight Criterium in West Chester where he finished 9th on one of the hardest criterium courses in the northeast, avoiding crashes and gritting his way to a top ten.  After riding in support of his team throughout the series, Chuck made the break a week later in the Kennnett Square Finals, where he narrowly missed the victory to snag third in a thrilling finish.

The story of the week was the teamwork by Equipe Vitesse in the Category 4 men’s division.  Between the anchors of Kenn Barfell, Jeff Wolf, and Greg Zielinski, the Vitesse riders selflessly escorted their newest teammate, Nick Sears to victory in all four races they started together, as well as collecting ten top-five finishes as a unit during the series.  The “New Sensation” Nick Sears is beginning a training campaign at Vitesse this summer and will soon race in the Category 3’s after his breakout week.

Vitesse Owner, Michael Chauner, shows early season form in Florida

Owner and coaching director of Vitesse Sport Performance, Michael Chauner, made a strong debut with his new 2013 professional team, Garneau — Quebecor, in the Cigar City Brewing Twilight Criterium in Tampa, FL on March 16th.  Ranked as a National Criterium Calendar event, the “Tampa Crit” featured the top American pro squads in an 85-man field that raced 80 laps on a 1km circuit.

Midway through the blisteringly fast race, Chauner made an attack and rode solo for one kilometer, before being joined by his powerful and experienced Canadian teammate, Bruno Langlois.  The two worked together and developed a small lead, and were then caught by a small chase group that included Frank Travesio of Team Smartstop-Mountain Khakis, and Hilton Clarke of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling.

The unit worked together cohesively and built up a significant enough lead to lap the field with 13 laps remaining.  Upon catching the peloton, Langlois and Chauner worked quickly and together reached the front, hanging on to the back of a searing United Healthcare lead out train.  Avoiding crashes and chaos in a dangerous final, Langlois and Chauner took second and third respectively by craftily outmaneuvering all of their breakaway companions but Hilton Clarke.

Chauner now sits in the top 15 on the American National Criterium circuit, and showed his power and poise for the 2013 season with Garneau — Quebecor.

Michael Chauner and teammate, Bruno Langlois, of Garneau Quebecor, take the second two podium spots in the Cigar City Brewing Criterium.
Michael Chauner and teammate, Bruno Langlois, of Garneau Quebecor, take the second two podium spots in the Cigar City Brewing Criterium.
